To the editor: I am writing this letter to recognize the staff and students of the Career & Technology Education Department of the Oregon City Schools.
Over the past several years, the Career & Tech Department has adopted a family or two for Christmas. The original intent of the gesture was to provide some modest assistance to a family over the holidays and to help provide the children of those families with a modest Christmas celebration. The children were always the beneficiary of the activities.
This year it is my turn to benefit. I was lucky enough to be the person delivering the gifts to the parents of the families that were adopted. We usually have about three to four families. Over the years, the event has grown. We had requests from each school to take more than just one family per school. My staff replied, “We can handle it” and handle it they did.
This year, the career and tech staff and students adopted 10 families. There were 30 children and 16 parents who received gifts. The generosity provided by the staff and students of the Oregon City Schools Career & Technology Education Department was tremendous. The students and teachers were provided an anonymous Christmas list and shopped for each family member. More than $4,000 worth of presents and donations poured into my office. We had a room filled with presents from winter coats and boots to cookbooks and puzzles.
I wish to publicly thank the Oregon City Schools, Career & Tech staff and students for their outpouring of generosity and Christmas spirit. The tears of joy and looks of appreciation and gratitude given by the parents of the families reminded me of the true meaning of Christmas giving. I am proud to be a member of the Career & Tech team.
