Mentors needed To the editor: If you’re a coach, listen up.
Have you ever tried to walk a day in your athletes’ shoes? Do you know where they live or the situation they leave every day to get away and try to forget for a while?
I bet your mother wasn’t a drug addict and if your father was around, I bet he wasn’t an abusive alcoholic. Did you have to work to help the household meet bills?
Not everyone is born with a white picket fence in his or her yard, eating off a silver spoon on LaLa Street. If kids in your community aren’t playing the sport you coach, it's time to go.
Kids need you on their side, not barking down their necks. Be a mentor not another jerk in their life.
The old saying, “you catch more flies with honey” pertains to more in life than you know. Be a friend, you’ll have the kids’ respect and they'll actually want to play for you and please you when it comes to game time. Stephanie Meinke Curtice
