Mall needs support
To the editor: In response to your recent question, “What is the greatest need at the Woodville Mall?” The posted responses – “more and better stores and better maintenance” – are true; however, none of this can or will happen without customer and community support.

The question took me back to when the mall was full and these questions were routinely asked of shoppers in the mall itself. Unfortunately the times have changed. We now have a new mall owner and a fantastic and energetic new manager. The prices of rent have been adjusted to encourage filling space and the management team is working overtime to bring in activities and patrons.

I want to thank The Press newspapers for your continued generous support of our local facility. I also want to ask for this to continue, as well as to for people to come out, look around, and support our local business owners and employers. The rebirth can only work as a circular and symbiotic relationship – the more that the community supports our mall, the better the mall will be able to grow and serve our community.

Three strikes & out
To the editor: Walbridge Mayor Dan Wilczynski has announced he is running for office again. This will be his third time running; four years ago, he ran unopposed.

I say to him, three strikes and you are out.

He was given the opportunity to get things done and now that he has made that big announcement – he has found money to do curbs and gutters and what about some of the streets, alleyways that are a total mess. Isn’t that amazing how quickly he found some money to do this?

That certainly would look good on a letter sent to the residents. What was the total cost of that building we purchased to rent out, and please include the time village employees worked on it? Was this work put up for a bid? When the bid comes back way over the amount, that should have gone back to village council, with a total amount of money the village had to pay.

I was under the impression members of council should be making decisions in this village – not the mayor. I don’t see that happening. So why bother having a council when the mayor makes the decisions. Council members are on committees and should bring back to the full council their recommendations. In the last eight years, how many curbs, gutters and streets have been done?

With the mayor missing one and at times two meetings a month, is he now ready to give more of his time to the village?

We are tired of all the lip service.

Appreciating freedom
To the editor: Each year on the Fourth of July, Americans celebrate Independence Day. It’s a time to remember the brave men and women who built our nation and secured the freedom we enjoy today. It’s also an occasion to consider how we can make the most of that liberty or freedom as members of our communities. This is why I chose to challenge you to explore how we can use this gift of freedom that has cost so many so much.

In the 1976 revision of the Flag Code by Congress, the symbolism of the U.S. flag is considered to be a living symbol representing a living country. Common sense, in most cases, will dictate the proper display and respect due to the flag. Yet, we have seen many pictures and demonstrations of disrespect to this beloved, living symbol. All of our efforts to get this desecration declared unlawful by our Senators have failed thus far. Will you write or call your U.S. Senator in this case.

Last week, NBC quoted our Pledge of Allegiance omitting, “under God.” Today, it is being proposed that we ban the flag from our schools. Isn’t it time that the “tail stop wagging the dog?”

We need to be actively involved in overcoming issues that confront us as a nation. Are we only concerned with that which affects our pocketbooks? Quoting Somerset Maugham, “If a nation values anything more than freedom, it will lose its freedom, and the irony of it is that if it is comfort or money it values more, it will lose that, too.”

Someone may pose this question to you – get ready – you don’t want to be ignorant about something that means so much to us loyal Americans. I challenge each of you to learn more and give a detailed explanation of our Independence Day.
