Take responsibility To the editor: Mr. Cherry’s rant about abortion causing all our problems in America as God’s punishment made me sick.
I expected conservative Fundamentalists to start blaming America’s problems on their own stupidity as soon as the idea that America is falling apart finally hit them.
Perhaps Mr. Cherry should look to himself to blame.
And if you want to talk murder, Mr. Cherry, you Fundamentalists are doing a super job – 50,000 deaths a year from people not being able to afford health care. Your Republicans are still fighting a war in drag, killing hundreds of thousands, fought only for oil.
Fox News morons still believe it was for weapons of mass destruction. With greed and corporations taking over America and government and backing deregulation, we have had more crashes, drugs killing thousands as they were not tested under the Bush FDA and an oil spill from coastline drilling poisoning the fish and water we live from.
We are reaping what we sow and I think its Fundamentalist greed and men like yourself who are doing us in.
Start taking some responsibility for your action. Al Kapustar Oregon
A credit to the team To the editor: The Press has published two articles recently regarding the 1974 Genoa boy’s basketball team and Coach Dave Hitchen.
While it’s great to see the acknowledgements, both articles were erroneous.
When referencing the group that led this 1974 team, both articles neglected to include Ken Brown.
The articles were written by two different reporters, each making the same omission. It seems odd that two different people would both get the facts incorrect; possibly they relied on the same source. Coach Dave Hitchen is the source they should have consulted. Coach Hitchen would have shared that Ken Brown:
• Was an integral part of the starting five due to his team-first approach, great ball-handling skills and superior outside shooting game.
• Started every game (24) of the season.
• Looked first to pass down low to the big men (Hammye and Niehaus).
• Averaged 9.6 points per game.
• Had the best field goal percentage of all other guards on the team at 51 percent. The next closest was 44 percent.
• Was named honorable mention All Ottawa County that year.
• Scored 18 points in a regional matchup against Norwalk when they attempted to shut down the inside game. Most of his nine field goals would have been three-pointers today.
• Embodied a competitive spirit that always put the team first.
The 1974 basketball team was a talented group of individuals that played well together. Ken Brown was a vital component of the chemistry that made them successful.
This team was likely the best team Dave Hitchen ever coached. Dave Hitchen deserves a lot of credit for many years of successful basketball. Coach Hitchen is an honorable man and if asked, would validate what’s been written above about Ken Brown. Respectfully submitted by a very proud father, Ken Brown Sr. Rossford
Editor’s Note: The Press stands behind features on the 1974 Genoa boys’ basketball team for their accuracy. Coach Hitchen was one of the sources for the stories and not all the players on the team were mentioned. We apologize to Mr. Brown for the omission of his son.
