To the editor: Sunday, June 27 was the Elmore Portage River Festival during the day, and in the evening, the Elmore Chamber of Commerce had a chicken barbeque, entertainment and the spectacular fireworks.
All that work and the sky burst open with rain, but it did stop and it ended up being a lovely day. When it did rain, people took it in their stride and went on making the day a very pleasant one for all who came and enjoyed the food and activities that awaited them.
So many volunteers donated their time and energy to make sure everyone attending had a great time and enjoyed themselves.
A great big thank you goes to everyone who purchased tickets for the annual Red, White and Boom drawing to help pay for the fireworks display, to volunteers who worked so hard, and to all the ones supporting and attending the activities.
Elmore is an awesome community. Betty Marlow Miller Elmore
Hats off To the editor: Hats off to our new mayor, Mike Seferian. For so many years, citizens of the city of Oregon have had to go to downtown Toledo or west to the Maumee River to celebrate Independence Day with fireworks.
It always seemed like such a chore to find a place to view the fireworks spectacular. There was never a comfortable spot to take your family without fighting immense crowds of viewers. If you wanted to find something to drink or a snack, forget about it.
Well, now thanks to Mike, we are going to have our own celebration at the German American Park on Seaman Road. Hope the good Lord will give us a pleasant evening.
Thanks also to BP Refinery for giving us a great donation. All those who helped with this program should take a bow.
It’s about time we have our own Fourth of July. Also, take the time for all the soldiers who gave of themselves for our independence. Larry Erard Oregon
Police applauded To the editor: As a resident of Northwood, I applaud the city’s district enforcement of speed limits. I feel that Northwood police are simply performing their duty of keeping residents safe, and if they just so happen to make a pretty penny on the fines, good for them.
Other cities should follow Northwood’s lead in this matter rather than allow drivers to speed through their jurisdictions at 10-plus miles over the posted speed limits. Cities that allow such blatant violation of the law are servicing no one and certainly not their taxpayers.
I am proud to say that I feel safe driving on Northwood roads. I am among the small percentage of people who usually drives at or slightly below the posted speed limits on all roads, regardless of what city or state I am in. Even on I-75, where the posted limit is 65 mph, I go 65 (OK, I admit sometimes I will kick it up to 68).
Besides, most people don’t follow the rules – I am often tailgated and cut off by speeding drivers. I don’t experience this in Northwood and enjoy my driving experiences much more because of the outstanding work of the Northwood police. Scott Deaner Northwood
