The 2010 Gold Star Awards: From a film maker to a mellophonist

No money, trophies or medals go with the 24th Annual Gold Star Awards, just a gold star for the refrigerator and congratulations from an observer.

John “Jack” Barber,” long time coach of the East Side Raiders, and the coaches and players who played for the CYO team that disbanded after 70 years.

The Toledo Walleye and Clay and Anthony Wayne high schools for setting the attendance record for a high school hockey game when they hosted a fundraiser for Kyle Cannon, a Clay player paralyzed in a 2008 game.

Pastor David Nevergall of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Elmore community who came to the aid of David and Linda Ladd whose home was destroyed by fire. 

Scott Williams, recipient of the East Toledo Family Center’s Dorie Steinmetz Memorial Community Service Award.

Christina Jiminez, recipient of the East Toledo Family Center’s Reddish Leadership Award for sportsmanship and character.

Laura Perkins, recipient of the Cousino’s Youth of the Year Award presented by the East Toledo Family Center for high academic performance, leadership and the ability to withstand peer pressure.

Ty Weaver, recipient of the Green Creek Wildlife Society’s volunteer of the year award for donating 400 hours on various wildlife projects.

Cari Buehler, Allen Central assistant principal, and her fourth graders for raising $6,700 for the American Cancer Society.

Ellen Herman, Oregon resident, new member of the United States National Volleyball Training Team, which in February played an exhibition match in China.

Zak Mulligan, Woodmore grad, winner of the 2010 Excellence in Cinematography Award at the Sundance Film Festival for his work on Obsolidia.

Maria Maluchnik, president of Cheer for a Cure, and volunteers who raised $31,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Brody Haar, member of Boy Scout Troop 314 and Jonathan Griffith, Troop 160, Millbury named new Eagle Scouts.

Ian Miller, Oak Harbor, Ohio State wrestling champ at 145 pounds.

Robert Strack, volunteer woodsmith at the Lutheran Home of Toledo, for teaching wood working classes for the home’s residents.

Sunoco Toledo Refinery, Eagle’s Nest Sweet Retreat, James “Wes” Hancock Oregon Senior Center, A. A. Boos, Bay Park Community Hospital and Bob Marquette, winners of the 17th Annual Prism Awards sponsored by the Eastern Maumee Bay Chamber of Commerce.

Gross Electric on its 100th year in business.

Manny May, Waite Indians girls’ basketball coach, Natasha Howard, Ohio Player of the Year, and the rest of the team for a 24-3 season and runner up finish in the state basketball tournament.

Crystal Bowersox, Elliston, American Idol’s runner up.

Canen Smith, Clay junior, Ohio State power lifting champion at 155 pounds.

Fr. David Reinhart, former president of the Kateri Catholic School System, who re-enlisted in the United States Air Force to serve as a chaplain in a war zone.

Bob Yenrick, William Garfield Cummings, Bill Nopper and Shirley Jean Clark named Distinguished Citizens by The East Toledo Family Center.

Zion Lutheran Church members for giving away household items, food and clothes to 122 people in need during its Give Away Project.

George Ackerman, honored by the Village of Curtice as outstanding citizen of the year for his civic contributions.

Lucas Liner, eighth grader at Eastwood Middle School, champion of The Blade’s Northwest Ohio Championship Spelling Bee and winner of a trip to compete in the nationals in Washington, D.C.

Justin Welch, state shot-put and discus champion, for leading his Eastwood Eagles to its second consecutive Division II state title.

Al and Elizabeth Rose, formerly of Oregon, both 100 years old, and married for 79 years.
 
Derrick Vicars, Genoa, sophomore at University of Findlay, NCAA Division II discus champion.

Brandon Rodriguez, 13, Kateri Catholic Academy student, organizer of a car wash, which raised $300 for the Toledo Area Humane Society.

Zach McGuire, 12, who raised $191 for the Tornado Relief Fund by selling Kool-Aid from his West Toledo driveway.

John Vallance, L.J. Overmyer, Mike Blay, Mike George, Kevin Fox and others who help build a new horse barn for the Ottawa County Fair.

Johnny Beaber and Jim Roepke (Posthumously), both of Gibsonburg, inducted into the Fremont Speedway Hall of Fame.

Joe Gutillo, head football coach at Cardinal Stritch, and his players for volunteering to move furniture from St. Thomas Aquinas in East Toledo and St. Jerome’s in Walbridge to the new Kateri Catholic Academy.

The Kish family for providing 50 years of roller skating fun at The Fun Spot in Oregon.

Del and Nancy Ackerman, former Toledoans, who made the Guinness Book of World Records for keeping their 24-hour food store open continuously for 47 years.

Jen Myers, Michelle Emahiser Allen and Brian Pearson for their efforts in the “It Takes a Community to Raise a Child School Supply Drive,” which used coupons to purchase school supplies for needy families in the Genoa School District.

Jessica Celestino, Waite grad, one of 30 young people across the country chosen to speak on education at the 2010 National Council for Community Education Partnerships/Gear Up Youth Leadership Summit held in Washington, D.C.

Elizabeth Urbanowski, Lake grad and El Paso Texas resident, for leading the effort to secure first place in the Kohl’s Cares Contest on Facebook for Lake High School which resulted in a $500,000 donation to help rebuild the school.

Barney, Northwood’s crime-fighting canine (posthumously), and his handler Ptl. Fred Genzman for six years of service.

Luella Jane (Sendi) Humbarger, Pastor Adrian Sunday, Steven Suto, James Jacob and David Sendi, inducted into the Birmingham Neighborhood Hall of Fame.

Liz Hartman and the other homework Helpers at Locke Branch library.

Nathan Henn, Woodville, named Ohio Highway Patrol Fremont Post Trooper of the Year.

Lois Bowlus, Pemberville, whose photo she took of her granddaughter was chosen for a Hallmark Christmas card.
