Ford Motor Company and Mathews Ford on Wednesday presented a $3,540 check to the Oregon Public Schools.

The check was the donation for the school’s participation in the Ride for Your School program. A $20 donation was made for each person 18-years-old and over who test drove a new Ford during a special event held at Fassett Middle School during the fall. More than 170 parents, teachers and students test drove the 13 to 14 new Fords which were on display at the school, said Brian Shephard, sales manager at Mathews.

The school district can use the money anyway it  sees fit. Ray Campos, Mathews service manager and coordinator of the program, said the company is looking for two high schools to be involved in 2010. The schools must be located in Oregon, Northwood or East Toledo, Campos said.  For information call him at 419-698-4444.

The bottom line
First Defiance Financial Corporation, holding company for First Federal bank of the Midwest and First Insurance & Investments, announced fourth quarter earnings of $1.6 million, compared to $88,000 for the fourth quarter of 2008, according to a company press release.

Net income for the fiscal year ending December 31 totaled $8.3 million or 76 cents per diluted share compared to $7.4 million or 91 cents per diluted share for 2008.

The Board of Directors did not declare a cash dividend for the fourth quarter. “We expect elevated levels of nonperforming loans and loan loss provisions for the near term as well as other challenges posed by the current economic and regulatory environment,” William J. Small, chairman, president and CEO said. “Therefore, we believe that this is a time to conserve capital. We believe that the fundamentals of the Company remain sound, but it will take some time to work through the problem credits precipitated by the recession and current real estate downturn. As we get these troubled assets worked through the system we expect to return to levels of profitability more consistent with the past."

Local First Federal offices are in Genoa and Oregon.
