Black Swamp Bird Observatory honors volunteers
At the recent annual volunteer appreciation picnic, Black Swamp Bird Observatory (BSBO) presented the prestigious “Shieldcastle Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service” to Nancy Bogart, of Redford Township, Mich., and Deb Neidert, of Akron.

Created in honor of Mark and Julie Shieldcastle, two of the founding members of the Observatory, the award recognizes individuals who have given extraordinary time, talent, and service to BSBO’s mission to inspire the appreciation, enjoyment and conservation of birds and their habitats through research, education, and outreach.

Scout Moms honored
The Erie Shores Council of the Boy Scouts of America recently announced the recipients of its third annual Scout Mom award.

This year, the Council Marketing Committee received it largest number of nominations – nearly 50 Scout Moms were nominated by either an Erie Shores Council Scout or Scout Leader. Council judges then reviewed the list of nominees and selected award recipients based on nominations as well as other factors such as nominees’ commitment of time to Scouting, community engagement, leadership, and Scouting longevity.

Among the awardees were Amber Saurbeck, of Curtice; Katrina Friedberg, of Fremont; Jeanine Van Der Laar, of Helena and Tammy Kissell, of Gibsonburg.

“It truly is our privilege to honor these amazing Scout Moms,” said Ed Caldwell, Scout Executive and CEO of the Erie Shores Council. “This annual award is a way to recognize all moms, really, but these mothers exemplify what being a Scout Mom is all about. Erie Shores Council is lucky to be associated with many moms that know that Scouting teaches strong values, leadership and personal development.”

Former fire chief laid to rest
With the traditional arch formed by two extended ladders from fire trucks, friends and colleagues of James “Dickie” Kaylor paid their last respects July 23 to the former assistant chief of the Harris-Elmore Fire Department. Kaylor, a member of the department for 40 years before retiring, was buried at Union Cemetery in Elmore with a bagpipe playing, courtesy of a member of the Black Swamp Pipes and Drums, and a fly-over by the LifeFlight helicopter.
