Proud of Lake hockey
To the editor: I wanted to clarify several things mentioned on the article about Lake hockey last week.  First, I am not a "computer guy" (as former coach Gene Ward states).  I simply compiled over 30 years of individual game score sheets that Gene Ward had saved from his tenure as coach and my time with the Lake Hockey Boosters and as coach.

Lake hockey would have ceased to exist, I believe in the 2000-01 season when the entire coaching staff resigned unexpectedly during the season.  Had it not been for Don Schwamberger, a former Lake player, stepping in and taking over the program, I am sure the team would have been forced to fold.

When Lake won its first championship in 23 years in 2004-05, the amazing thing not mentioned in the article was that it was done with usually just eight skaters and a goalie.  These young men, Zach Akenberger, Kyle Brown, Tom Duris, Nick Foley, Nick Griffith, Steve Lowe, Alex Maze, Aaron Schofield, Billy Sigler, Matt Winkle, and Tom Wojciechowski were more than a team, they were brothers.

Over the years, the alumni have been a valuable resource for Lake's hockey program.  Many former players volunteered their time, helping players over the years that I coached learn basic hockey skills and even teaching them how to skate.  Many supported the program financially and with donations of equipment.

Finally, I would like to thank the players, their parents, the financial supporters, and Tim Cahill Sr. for helping to keep the program going strong when I was coach.

Lake Hockey Varsity Head Coach

Editor’s note: All-time records remain sketchy because it became a club sport not affiliated with the school following the 2006-07 year. Coach Steinhurst is in the process of finding updated records.

Just curious
To the editor: I read in The Press about a proposed monument on Navarre and Wheeling and I would like to ask the age-old question of why were the house and property taken down in the first place?

The gentleman who lived there fought to keep it, but it was taken anyway. The yard on the corner was beautiful to see from the street as you drove up to the stoplight. I, for one, miss seeing and getting ideas for my own yard. Could someone with some knowledge tell me what happened?

Good luck with the new proposal.

A serious offense
To the editor: With the recent vulgar remark by Rush Limbaugh, we the women of Ohio should want this man removed from our airways. His personal attach on all women needs to be addressed.

Ms. Fluke, a law student at Georgetown University, who was advocating for insurance plans to cover the cost of contraception, became the target of attacks by Limbaugh.

Besides calling her a slut, he called her a “prostitute.” And said he wanted her to make sex tapes and post them online. He speculated she only had a problem paying for contraception because she was having “so much sex.”

We who support Ms. Fluke find this a serious offense by Limbaugh and we ask that this radio show be terminated. His program should be rated “R” for sick listeners and viewers. I will request the FCC to investigate.

I am a mom of three daughters and granddaughters. If that would have been spoken to any one of them, it would end up in a courtroom.
