To the editor: Re: Union leaders smell a rat in Marina District cleanup.

It’s an interesting story but there’s more to it. According to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 26.3 percent of Ohio construction workers are union members.

What are these guys saying - that almost three-quarters of the construction workers in the state shouldn’t be allowed to work on the job because they aren’t union?
How can the “prevailing wage” prevail when only 26.3 percent are earning it? For an answer, visit

A positive change
To the editor:  On Nov. 4, voters of Genoa Area Local Schools have their last opportunity to positively change the education our children receive for generations to come.  The Ohio Schools Facilities Commission (OSFC) is offering Genoa Area Local Schools a funding proposal whereby  Ohio pays 74.5 percent of the total cost to build a new elementary school for grades K-5, as well as funds for renovating our existing high school for grades 9-12.  This is the final opportunity for Genoa Area Local Schools to secure these funds, if we fail to seize this opportunity now Genoa area taxpayers will face certain undue hardship in years to come without this state assistance.  It is unprecedented the State of Ohio has these capital expenditure funds available.  OSFC funding was obtained by the State of Ohio from the tobacco settlement funds whose use former Governor Taft mandated for capital school expenditure projects.

A homeowner with a market value of $80,000 will see a yearly tax increase of $58.84; a homeowner with a market value of $100,000 will see an increase of $73.55, and a homeowner with a market value of $200,000 will realize an increase of $147.10.

The much greater benefit to the Genoa area community is the message we send that we value education and its importance to our children’s success.  Genoa Area Local Schools possess an incredible team of caring teachers and administrators who are very dedicated. Please give them and our children your support for this important last chance funding opportunity. I know they will take care of the trust you place in them.

Spread the wealth
To the editor: The Extreme Home Makeover has come and gone. This was great publicity for the City of Toledo and also helped a well-deserving family? But where does it end?

Now I see the University of Toledo has given full scholarships for all 11 boys. Wow! I am a hardworking, taxpaying self-employed businessman in the area and my daughter, as well as several of her friends, want to go to UT next year. University of Toledo, how do we get full scholarships for our sons and daughters so we don't have to worry about their education financially?  We like pizza. Marco's, Papa John's, how do we get free pizza for a year? My family would love to belong to the YMCA, how can we be a member for free? What I wouldn't do for $25,000 worth of free tools for my business. Enough is enough.

Do you think a wall along our Mexican border is needed?
