The leaves have turned. The maples are orange, the poplars yellow, a lone towering oak has turned a rust red. The bushes that frame this park path are plum and green and the sky a deep clear blue. It’s the fall of the year, and the late fall of my life. Still, I marvel at the beauty of changing colors and I am thankful for one more fall.

My 15-month-old grandson is running next to me. He must take four steps to my one, but he shows no signs of tiring. He bounces forward, arms flailing in all directions experimenting with the most efficient way to maintain balance. He stops occasionally to stoop and investigate a leaf, a stone, a break in the wall of bushes. Sometimes he will stop, clench his fists, straighten his arms and squeal with joy.

News: The Ohio Wetland Foundation announced it would return to wetlands 225 acres of farmland at Pearson North. The $1 million project would feature a cascading creek, vernal pools, a dense forested zone and a wet prairie. It would surround the new historical interpretation center featuring the 1867 Johlin Cabin.

Children, seniors and the poor will benefit from five grants awarded Thursday evening by the East Toledo Club.

The five grants, totaling $4,000, were presented at the club’s 90th anniversary celebration held at the Eastwood Theater. They are:

$1,000 to the East Toledo Campus of Hope Community Church to partially fund a Gaga Ball pit. Gaga is a fast-paced sport played in an octagonal pit. It has been called a gentler version of dodgeball and is popular with youth groups such as the Boy Scouts. Participants throw a soft foam ball trying to hit opponents below the knee. The sport combines the skills of dodging, running and jumping. The pit would be located at Oakdale Park;
