Why do we eat what we eat?

Many of us eat foods that are familiar, convenient, and that simply taste good, without thinking much about why we make the choices we do.

For others — myself included — there’s a constant struggle to determine what’s healthy, both for ourselves and for the planet. The dietary habits we maintain become part of our identities.

But thanks to conflicting information, evolving norms, and endless confusion about what counts as “healthy,” it’s getting harder to settle comfortably into our choices.

Almost two-thirds of Americans today — 63 percent — don’t have enough savings to cover an unexpected $500 expense. Anything from an emergency brake job to a refrigerator on the fritz could zero out their bank accounts.

Most American households, in other words, are living on the financial edge. And that suits America’s biggest bank CEOs just fine. They love to see Americans desperately juggling credit cards and checking accounts to keep bills paid.

With all that juggling, our banksters know, something will inevitably get dropped. A checking account will be slightly overdrawn. A debit card transaction will overstep a limit. And that’s when the banks start to really clean up — through overdraft fees.

My grandmother died feeling betrayed, frightened and utterly powerless in a bleak hospital room. She’d completed an advance directive about her end-of-life goals, preferences and values, including a do not resuscitate order (DNR). But when an emergency landed her in the hospital, the emergency room team ignored her advance directive and resuscitated her back to “life” just long enough for her to realize they had ignored her documented wishes. She died shortly after being resuscitated, but not before she let the healthcare team know she was angry.

abortion

The Ohio legislature has passed a bill that would ban abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected. In practice, that would make abortion illegal after six weeks.
