From Wednesday, June 23 to Tuesday, June 29, Lake Lady Flyers summer basketball team members were at the University of San Diego for a basketball camp.

The Flyers were one of 62 teams participating with most of them being from California along with some teams from Nevada, Arizona and Colorado.

When Lake coach Denny Meyer was at Hamilton High School in Chandler, Arizona he had taken that varsity team to this very same camp.

When he took the coaching job at Lake he says he told the parents and players, “We would fundraise and take an out of state trip every summer.” He is keeping his promise.

Last year the team went to Phoenix, and going to San Diego this year was special because none of the players had been to California before.

Coach Meyer said, “The reason we make a trip every year is for team bonding and also to play against competition from other parts of the country.”

The coach added, “This trip was a very good learning experience.  We played against six very athletic teams and we competed very well. The coach from USD told me on the first day that she gave us a very tough competitive schedule.

“Our overall record at the camp was 4-2. One team was an AAU team from San Diego area that was sponsored by Candice Wiggins, who graduated from Stanford a few years ago and plays for Minnesota in the WNBA. We will never face a team as good as they were. They have two sophomores that are being recruited by Stanford right now. We lost to them, 55-11, but it was a great wake-up call because our next game was against one of the top big schools in San Diego and we responded by beating them, 52-32.”

The Lake girls’ program, from fifth grade and up, raises money year-round for such trips. Some of the fundraisers include a chicken dinner before the alumni game, the 50/50 raffle at home games, and most recently they had a very successful car wash in June.

“If everyone continues to help, we will make sure every girl gets a chance to make at least one summer trip.” said Coach Meyer, adding that they would like to return to the San Diego camp “because we like to travel out of state and this camp is a very well run camp and their coaches are great people. I talked to the coaches at USD and told them our goal is to try and come back to their camp every other year.”

Did the team enjoy participating in the camp? Meyer says so. The past two years Coach Meyer’s Lake varsity team has gone 20-0 overall during the regular season and has been state ranked — proof that the camp is effective.

Meyer said, “I think that they enjoyed it.  I know that most of our players like to play against different teams from other areas.  They know how important it is for us to play against good competition in the summer to help get us ready for the regular season.”

With the recent destruction of the Lake gym, the team will be playing all of their home games at Owens Community College and likely practicing at St. Jerome’s School in Walbridge. Coach Meyer liked the fact they will be playing at Owens because “I did not want to have to play 20 games at 20 different sites and I think it’s nice  to not have to have our home games at someone else’s high school.”

Even though he has not talked with the team since the official announcement was made that home games would be at Owens, he said that the team had always thought Owens would be a great place for home games.

On July 17, the program is hosting a casino bus trip to Motor City Casino in Detroit as another fundraiser. The bus will leave at 2 p.m. from the old Steve and Barry’s parking lot on Woodville Road just outside Northwood and will return at approximately 10 p.m. Cost is $35 (receiving $25 back from casino).
