Former Clay football, wrestling, and track star Nick Tammerine has already started to make his mark for the Notre Dame University track and field team.

The Fighting Irish freshman sprinter finished 13th in 23.52 in the Notre Dame Indoor Opener.

At Clay, Tammerine was named team captain of track team for his junior and senior campaigns, where he set school records in the 200 meter, 400 meter, and with the 4x100 relay and the 4x400 relay teams.

Tammerine was named an All-City League selection his sophomore through senior years in football, freshman through senior years in track, and freshman and sophomore years in wrestling,

Tammerine told The Press as he prepared for the Division state track meet last spring that Notre Dame will eventually be nurturing Tammerine for hurdles events.

“Notre Dame was asking me to try running the hurdles this year, because they’re talking about me running the hurdles next year,” Tammerine explained.

According to Tammerine, the Irish coaching staff’s train of thought is to translate his sprint success at Clay into success at Notre Dame.

“I think it’s just a ‘guess and check’ kind of thing just to try it out and see if I can do it or not,” Tammerine said. “My (college) coaches said that it would be the best bet to experiment with (the hurdles) now and get some experience with them.”

The state qualifying sprinter added that there still may still be a chance he'll play football for the Fighting Irish, but that would have to be determined once he got settled in South Bend.

Tammerine was not listed on the football team’s roster this past the fall, and his scholarship is for track and field, and that is his priority for now. He owns four major career rushing and/or scoring records in Clay football history.

"I'm not sure yet (about football), I'll have to talk to coaches. Probably not the first year, but maybe down the line. I don't know," Tammerine told The Press last spring, so maybe there is a chance he’ll be on the Fighting Irish gridiron roster next fall.
