Those looking for information or assistance with enrolling in a health insurance plan may sign up to get help at a pair of programs being offered at the Harris-Elmore Fire Station, 321 Rice St.  Feb. 8 and March 22.

The free assistance will be available from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Trained health care navigators and certified application counselors from the Toledo/Lucas County CareNet and the Ohio Association of Foodbanks will be on hand to answer questions and help uninsured or underinsured individuals figure out which plan is best for them. Assistance will also be available with the application process.

Through the Health Insurance Marketplace set up under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, uninsured and underinsured Ohioans can compare coverage options side-by-side, learn about their eligibility for premium tax credits designed to lower premium costs and enroll in a Qualified Health Plan (QHP). Open enrollment will continue through March 31. Anyone not enrolled in a health insurance plan or Medicare/Medicaid by the deadline will be subject to tax penalties when filing their 2014 tax return.

Those interested in attending the open enrollment event in Elmore may sign up at the Elmore Public Library, 328 Toledo St.

“Many people have so many questions regarding the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid Expansion,” said Julie Grasson, assistant director of Toledo/Lucas County CareNet.

Appointments are preferred and may be made for the enrollment event at the Elmore Public Library, 328 Toledo St., Elmore.

Ohioans can visit to apply for private insurance or for Medicaid Expansion.

Those who are unable to attend the Elmore events may receive help from a navigator available every Friday at The Sutton Center, 1854 E Perry St., Suite 300, Port Clinton. To schedule an appointment, call the United Way at 419-734-6645 or contact Fremont Community Health Services, 410 Birchard Ave., Fremont, at 419-334-3869.
