New Mainstreet Bar & Grill is investment in East Side’s future

Terry Carroll, co-owner of the recently opened Mainstreet Bar & Grill, was born and raised on Toledo’s East Side, so it seemed natural that he would invest in the future of that side of town.

“The East Side is a very good place to have a business,” he said. “East Side people support their local businesses - very good clientele. My other two bars, I do very good business and I hope this venture is just as profitable. It’s exciting.”

Carroll has also owned The Bottom Line on Starr Avenue for nine years, and Beer 30 on Front Street for six years.
He and his ex-wife and business partner, Gloria Carroll, who also own Carroll’s Health & Fitness Center in Walbridge, opened Mainstreet Bar & Grill Feb. 18. The business is located at 141 Main St.

“It was very exciting,” Terry Carroll said. “Even though we own two other bars, they are neighborhood bars and quite smaller than this. When you quadruple your size, it’s a monumental event. It’s been an ordeal because of the condition the building was in. “My other bars, we only have one or two people (working) at a time. This location, on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, I have 12 to 14 just in security working, then a minimum of four bartenders.

“When we get busy, there will be four bartenders on each side of the restaurant working on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night,” he said. “We’re not there yet, but we’re going to get there quick.”

Carroll said eight to 12 workers took more than eight months to renovate the building, which formerly housed Mutt Lynch’s. The building had been vacant for two years but has since undergone an overhaul that includes new plumbing, electrical, drywall, floors, roof and heating system.

Carroll, who has been employed at Jeep for 42 years, said he gave the new establishment a nostalgic look.

“I went to Clay High School but I was born down on Ironville, at the end of Front Street,” he said. “I’m 60, so I remember years ago (Ironville) was down where the action was years ago. One thing about the bar is, we made it real friendly. I have a lot of pictures of the early 1800s and we actually put pictures in the bars and poured acrylic over them.

“The pictures on the wall are black and white of Mainstreet of the old buildings,” he said. “We have horse and buggy pictures, even a section on there of the old Jeep plant and different operations with that.”

At a Feb. 17 press conference, Toledo Mayor Carty Finkbeiner said, “Toledo’s Mainstreet owners Terry and Gloria Carroll are two of the proudest East Toledoans you will ever meet. Not only are these two entrepreneurs lifelong East Side residents, but they also worked directly with members of the East Toledo Historical Society in planning the interior of this venue.

“As you can see, Toledo’s Mainstreet is a virtual shrine to East Side Toledo Pride,” the mayor said. “To Terry and Gloria and Father Larry Michaels of the East Toledo Historical Society, I say, ‘well done.’ Together, you have created a business that makes us all proud to be Toledoans.

The menu at Mainstreet Bar & Grill, which employs 45 people, includes pizza, calzones, grinders, chicken chunks and cheese breads. Carroll plans to add to the menu every three to four weeks, he said. There is also a carryout menu. There is live entertainment, including karaoke on Tuesday, a disc jockey on Wednesdays and live country southern rock bands Thursday through Saturday.

The large patio alongside the building will open in May and includes a stage for outdoor entertainment.

“It’s a fairly big building, about 17,000 square feet,” Carroll said. “It’s beautiful. I see a lot of things I might be changing, but change is good.

“I’m happy with what I’ve got now, but I want to add to it a little bit,” he said. “We’ll be constantly making changes until we can get it the way we want it. It’s a beautiful building. It’s historic, and we’ve kind of brought that back to life.”

Mainstreet Bar & Grill is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. For more information, call 419-697-6297.

In a dedication of the establishment last month, Toledo Mayor Carty Finkbeiner lauded Mainstreet Bar & Grill owners Terry and Gloria Carrol as “two of the proudest East Toledoans you will ever meet.” The mayor congratulated the entrepreneurs for working with the East Toledo Historical Society to make Mainstreet is a virtual shrine to East Side Toledo Pride.
