Campers, hikers, hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts can help prevent the spread of emerald ash borer (EAB) in Ohio by not transporting firewood.

EAB and other exotic insects can become established when firewood is taken to new areas. The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) encourages citizens to inquire about the source of any firewood they buy and avoid purchasing ash logs. Firewood sellers are being asked to limit how many logs they move around the state. Officials are also discouraging people from hauling wood into or out of campgrounds - wood should be bought and burned locally.

A state quarantine in Ohio makes it illegal to move all hardwood firewood, ash trees and parts of ash trees out of Auglaize, Cuyahoga, Delaware, Defiance, Erie, Franklin, Fulton, Hancock, Hardin, Henry, Huron, Logan, Lorain, Lucas, Marion, Medina, Mercer, Miami, Sandusky, Seneca, Ottawa, Paulding, Warren, Williams, Wood and Wyandot counties. Violators face state fines up to $4,000.

Ohio is also under a federal quarantine that prohibits the movement of ash tree materials and hardwood firewood out of the Buckeye state without federal certification. For more information about firewood, contact ODA at 888-OHIO-EAB or visit www.ohioagriculture.gov/eab and look for “Facts About Ohio’s Emerald Ash Borer Quarantine.”
