The Ottawa County Prosecutor, the Ottawa County Coroner and the Port Clinton Police Department have issued an opiate overdose advisory effective immediately. Within the past seven days, there have been five reported opiate overdoses in Ottawa County. Three of the suspected overdoses have resulted in death. Based upon the recent trend, it is suspected that a batch of opiates is circulating within Ottawa County that is much more potent than usual.

The suspected overdoses are currently being investigated through a joint effort of the Ottawa County Drug Task Force, Port Clinton Police Department and the Ottawa County Coroner’s Office.

Oregon City Council late last year started discussions on passing a property maintenance code. The city administration presented a draft ordinance to council that is currently under review.

“It’s really up to the council now,” said City Administrator Mike Beazley. “Council asked the administration to prepare draft legislation to move this issue forward, and we did.”

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency admitted it was wrong last year to approve a decision by the Ohio EPA to designate only limited shoreline areas of western Lake Erie as “impaired.”

The Clean Water Act requires Ohio, every two years, to evaluate the water quality of all waters within its jurisdiction and submit a list to U.S. EPA that identifies each body of water that is impaired by pollution. The U.S. EPA then approves the list if it meets specific requirements, including the requirement to assemble and evaluate all existing and readily available water quality related data and information regarding water quality problems within a state’s jurisdiction.

The Navarre Avenue Safety Improvement project has been completed with the installation of decorative lights, a final feature that was added to the median.

City Administrator Mike Beazley told The Press last Wednesday that the project’s completion date had been delayed due to vendors in Houston getting bogged down last August after Hurricane Harvey, a category 4 hurricane, slammed into the Houston metropolitan area, causing $125 billion in damages.

“You can’t predict a hurricane flood in Texas will affect a project here in Oregon. But when some of the equipment we’re waiting for is dependent on being delivered from there, it can happen. There is such demand in Texas for the company to replace so many things, we were delayed for a couple of months. Things like that sometimes happen.”

Ottawa County will save about $188,431 by refinancing bonds that were issued to pay for improvements to water and wastewater systems, the board of county commissioners said last week.

After a review of the county’s debt, the board decided to refinance about $2 million in bonds issued for work on the county’s regional water treatment plant and transmission system and the Portage-Catawba Island sanitary sewer system.

The older debt had an interest rate of about 4.5 percent while the new debt will have an average rate of 3.18 percent, according to the commissioners.
