Before members of the Oregon school board embark in earnest on the search for a new superintendent, they will listen to residents and staff of the district.

A community forum is scheduled for June 3 at 7 p.m. in the Clay High School library to discuss issues facing the district and how they will impact the search process.

Dr. Michael Zalar announced recently he is leaving the Oregon district to take the position of superintendent of North Olmstead City School District. He’d been superintendent in Oregon since 2008 and was principal of Clay High School for five years prior to that.

With the recreational season getting underway at Ohio’s state park lakes, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has launched a new web-based map application that features real-time data of algal blooms at park beaches and public notices for drinking water.

The online tool enables users to view current advisories or sampling data of harmful algal blooms. The map shows a color-coded “snapshot” of the entire state, with additional information about any active advisories available by clicking the computer’s mouse.

On April 17, the Woodmore seniors loaded the bus and made their way to the Bahamas. After a 22-hour bus ride, they reached Port Canaveral in Florida. After getting through security checks, students began their experience of a life time aboard the Carnival cruise ship “Sensation.”

After being on the road for so long, the seniors made themselves right at home on the ship, changing into swimsuits and tank tops. Within just a few hours, the students were in the pool and hot tubs soaking up the sun.

Seeing new sights, mingling with tons of people everywhere, and driving through chaotic traffic – the Eastwood High School’s National Honor Society experienced this excitement in New York City this spring.

Getting up at the crack of dawn, the group of 47 finally left around 6 a.m.

The first few hours were spent on a bus until they arrived at the Flight 93 Memorial site in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Everyone was able to get out and walk around and see the wall of names, the benches that were put up and the rock that was put over the spot where all of the people lost their lives.

A special meeting of the Lake school board has been scheduled for June 3 to review contract bids for an interior renovation project at Lake High School to build additional classrooms.

The meeting, which will be held in the Middle School Media Center, will start at 5 p.m.

If a contract is awarded, the additional classrooms will be constructed on the second floor of what is called the Extended Learning Area of the high school, said Jeff Carpenter, district treasurer.
