The Lake Township trustees heard a report Tuesday from Dan McLargin, road supervisor, that an application for a grant to pay for replacing a stretch of Libbey Road has been submitted to the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission.

The department announced late last year it is accepting applications for funding from the Turnpike Mitigation Program, which was established to assist communities that are adversely affected by turnpike traffic. Projects being considered include bridge preservation, resurfacing, noise walls, drainage improvements and other related infrastructure work.

Proposed projects must be within one mile of the turnpike. The program will allocate about $5 million annually to projects with a cap of $1 million on individual projects.

A fundraiser is currently under way to benefit the Lake High School After Prom, a drug- and alcohol-free event, as well as other drug awareness programs at Lake.

Calls will be placed to families in the Lake community Monday through Thursday evenings between 4 and 9 p.m. offering the opportunity to buy gourmet pizzas; gourmet coffee samplers, chocolate chunk, sugar and oatmeal raisin cookie dough; Swiss tool flashlights; mason jar candles, Foodie Cards and durable, environmentally-friendly trash bags.

All products are guaranteed and will be delivered to your home with free delivery and no tipping.

On Jan. 14, the Ottawa County Commissioners recognized Ottawa County veteran William “Bill” Sorg, of American Legion Post 279, Elmore.

Sorg was drafted into the United States Army in March 1969. After training, he was deployed to Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam, with the 506th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, Phan Thiet. On April 8, 1970, during a patrol on Hill #74, his squad was attacked and nine soldiers, including Sorg were injured.

He participated in four combat missions during his time in theater. His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (four bronze stars), Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 device, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (two) and Combat Infantry Badge.

National Guard halts turbine project at Camp Perry

A letter of intent to sue the Ohio National Guard and an on-going petition effort were enough to convince federal officials to at least temporarily halt plans for constructing a wind turbine at Camp Perry near Oak Harbor.

The American Bird Conservancy and Black Swamp Bird Observatory last week were praising the decision by the National Guard Bureau office in Maryland to withdraw a key finding to the project effective immediately.

A “green” opportunity for the Village of Oak Harbor turned faces red at a recent meeting of village council.

Newly-seated councilmember Sue Rahm was upset that an Efficiency Smart Schedule program turned down by council late last year was once again on the meeting agenda for approval.

When she asked why it was again on the agenda, Mayor Bill Eberle said he had it placed there.

Speed Limit

Do you think 75 mph is a good speed limit for the Ohio Turnpike and rural highways?
