With the recreational season getting underway at Ohio’s state park lakes, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has launched a new web-based map application that features real-time data of algal blooms at park beaches and public notices for drinking water.

The online tool enables users to view current advisories or sampling data of harmful algal blooms. The map shows a color-coded “snapshot” of the entire state, with additional information about any active advisories available by clicking the computer’s mouse.

On April 17, the Woodmore seniors loaded the bus and made their way to the Bahamas. After a 22-hour bus ride, they reached Port Canaveral in Florida. After getting through security checks, students began their experience of a life time aboard the Carnival cruise ship “Sensation.”

After being on the road for so long, the seniors made themselves right at home on the ship, changing into swimsuits and tank tops. Within just a few hours, the students were in the pool and hot tubs soaking up the sun.

Seeing new sights, mingling with tons of people everywhere, and driving through chaotic traffic – the Eastwood High School’s National Honor Society experienced this excitement in New York City this spring.

Getting up at the crack of dawn, the group of 47 finally left around 6 a.m.

The first few hours were spent on a bus until they arrived at the Flight 93 Memorial site in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Everyone was able to get out and walk around and see the wall of names, the benches that were put up and the rock that was put over the spot where all of the people lost their lives.

A special meeting of the Lake school board has been scheduled for June 3 to review contract bids for an interior renovation project at Lake High School to build additional classrooms.

The meeting, which will be held in the Middle School Media Center, will start at 5 p.m.

If a contract is awarded, the additional classrooms will be constructed on the second floor of what is called the Extended Learning Area of the high school, said Jeff Carpenter, district treasurer.

Plan commission to review grant requests
Thirteen municipalities and agencies in Wood County have filed applications for Community Development Block Grant funding for various projects.

The requests total $570,001 but the county’s allocation of CDBG funding is only $191,000. Of that, the county planning commission will deduct about $31,000 for administration costs.

The planning commission will review the applications during its June 4 meeting and select four for recommendation to the county commissioners.
