After listening to residents about how a metropark should be developed at the site of the Marina District in East Toledo, a planning firm intends to hold another public meeting next month to present proposals for the site based on the public’s input.

About 50 people attended an open house Monday at the East Toledo Family Center that begins the process of planning the development of the Marina District.

ProMedica last January said it would purchase about 70 acres along the Maumee River and then sell most of the land to the Metroparks of the Toledo Area for development of a park.

Water quality tests conducted on the water supply in the Oregon City School District revealed trace amounts of lead in four drinking fountains and an elevated level in one sink.

There was no evidence of lead contamination at or above the action level set by the Environmental Protection Agency in any of the drinking fountains in the district.

The EPA establishes an action level for lead detected at or above 15 parts per billion or more.

Oregon Public Service Director Paul Roman wants city council to consider legislation to increase costs to those who do not pay their water bills.

“We are working on an ordinance to increase the penalty charge for nonpayment of water bills,” Roman said at a committee of the whole meeting on Monday. “For some time now, it’s one of the items I’ve wanted to do, but just didn’t have time. I’ve had time to catch up on things.”

The penalty charge to turn off water service is currently $16.

Maumee Valley Save-A-Pet, a non-profit organization that provides shelter, spay/neuter services and veterinary care to dogs and cats throughout Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan in a faree-roaming shelter environment is seeking volunteers for a rummage sale scheduled for September 1 – 3.

Volunteers are needed to price and sort donations prior to the sale, to work the days of the sale and to make goods for the bake sale. They are also needed for clean-up Sept. 4-8. Call 419-537-9663 for more information.

There are more than 2,100 veterans buried in the Lake Township Cemetery and Jeff Pettit figures they each deserve a wreath this Christmas season.

A local business owner, Pettit is a location coordinator for Wreaths Across America, a non-profit organization dedicated to remembering the sacrifice of veterans by placing wreaths on their graves and holding simultaneous ceremonies during the holidays across the country.

“I was a volunteer guardian with Honor Flight of Northwest Ohio when I heard about Wreaths Across America and thought it was a neat tribute to veterans,” he said. “The first thing I had to do was get the cemetery registered.”

His goal now is to raise sufficient funding to cover all the veterans’ graves in the township cemetery with wreaths.
