 Proposals for establishing a case manager position to assist gifted students and to provide a program for online alternatives to the traditional educational setting were presented to the Benton-Carroll-Salem school board last week.
 Superintendent Guy Parmigian said he and the board have been discussing ways to better meet the needs of gifted students.

Northwood’s second feature film as part of its free “Movie in the Park” program will be on Saturday, Aug. 5 at 8:45 p.m. in Brentwood Park.
 
“Moana,” is a 2016 American 3D computer-animated musical fantasy-adventure film produced by Walt Disney Studios released last year that features Dwane Johnson. The film went on to gross over $642 million worldwide. It is the last Movie in the Park for this season. 

Oregon City Council on Monday voted 6-1 for a new three year contract with the Fraternal Order of Police, the union that represents the police department’s command officers.
 
The union consists of 10 command officers, including one lieutenant and nine sergeants. 
 
“It is the first of our negotiated contracts from different divisions in the city,” said Mayor Mike Seferian at a council meeting on July 24. 
 
The contract includes a pay raise of 3 percent retroactive to July 1 of this year, a raise of 2 ¾ percent starting July 1, 2018, and a 2 3/4 percent raise starting July 1, 2019. The contract will expire on June 30, 2020.

The city of Oregon has decided not to tear down and reinstall new baseball practice fields on city property adjacent to the Coontz Recreation Center, despite concerns they were not put in properly.
 
P.J. Kapfhammer, owner of Maumee Bay Turf Center, said at a city council meeting in June that the practice fields were substandard and not “playable.”

        For the past six years, Toledo’s Pet (Prevent, Educate, Training) Bull Project has been training both dogs and people in how to get along and live a rewarding life.

        The organization is committed to preventing animal cruelty and dog fighting. At the same time, its helps to educate pet owners and young people on pet responsibility and the importance of spay and neuter.

        Now, they need the community’s help to continue their programming.
