The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency on September 30 issued a final permit renewal for Envirosafe Services of Ohio, Inc., (ESOI), a hazardous waste facility at 876 Otter Creek Road in Oregon.

The facility submits an operating permit renewal request to the state every 10 years. The last time the agency approved a Hazardous Waste Facility Installation and Operation Permit to Envirosafe was on Dec. 29, 2005. The permit expired on Dec. 29, 2015. The facility submitted a request to the Ohio EPA for a renewal on June 30, 2015. The facility is allowed to operate under the terms of the expired permit until the director of the Ohio EPA issues or denies the renewal permit.

The Toledo Lucas County Public Library is seeking a 2.9-mill property tax renewal and an additional .8 mill levy, and the 9-1-1 public safety communication system is requesting a 0.7 mill renewal on the Nov. 8 General Election ballot.

Jason Kucsma, deputy director of The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, said fifty percent of the library’s budget comes from property taxes.

Failure to pass the levies would mean “severe” cuts in library services over the next several years, he said.

A $311,676 grant was awarded to The Imagination Station, the hands-on science learning center in Toledo, it was announced last week.

The grant is from the Institute of Museum and Library Services’ (IMLS) National Leadership Grants for Museums. The funding will bolster efforts by Imagination Station to help parents, program staff, and volunteers to promote an interest in science and to facilitate research and integration of design features to improve the quality of visitor experience.

In 2008, state government distributed to Toledo just under $25 million from local government funds, estate taxes and property tax disbursements. In 2016, that was closer to $8 million — a difference of $17 million.

 After completing its second refinancing of debt incurred for school buildings, the Genoa school district is saving $760,750.

 The school board recently completed the refinancing of its outstanding debt for the elementary school building by issuing new bonds at an interest rate of 2.62 percent over 21 years, according to Bill Nye, district treasurer.

 The former interest rate was 4.78 percent, he said. The bonds being refinanced, in the amount of $4.37 million, were originally sold in 2009.  The refinancing was completed on Sept. 28.
