Collins Park homes - Craig fears eminent domain could be on horizon

District 3 councilman Mike Craig joined 10 colleagues Tuesday in overriding Mayor Michael Bell’s veto, effectively stopping a $700,000 appropriation to purchase and destroy homes for the expansion of Toledo’s Collins Park Water Treatment Plant.

The $314 million expansion was mandated by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and has to be completed within five years. Mayor Bell’s public information director, Jennifer Sorgenfrei, stressed that the EPA report was “quite lengthy” and it dictates what must happen at the plant.

The future of a wild animal refuge in Stony Ridge is in question as a new state law that enacts a wide-ranging permit and regulation program for such animals takes effect.

Ken Hetrick, owner of Tiger Ridge Exotics, said the cost of permits and other related expenses in the law may force him to close the refuge he’s operated for more than 30 years as a non-commercial venture that relies on donations to help meet costs.

Ottawa County - Wild Animal Response Team formed

A wild animal outbreak a year ago in southern Ohio is the driving force behind a new law that requires jurisdictions to establish special response teams.

Sheriff’s deputies and others shot 46 of the 56 animals that escaped or were set loose at Muskingum County Animal Farm in March 2012. The dead animals included a wolf, six black bears, two grizzly bears, nine male lions, eight lionesses, a baboon, three mountain lions and 18 tigers. They were buried at the site where they were killed.
