Tending to his animal refuge in Stony Ridge keeps Ken Hetrick busy as he and other owners of wild animals await a court decision that will impact their menageries.

Hetrick, the owner of Tiger Ridge Exotics, has said the costs of complying with a new state law requiring permits for owning certain animals and reptiles are too high for him to keep his refuge open.

“It’s out of reach for me,” he said. “They want insurance of $1 million. You can get insurance but not at a reasonable cost for what I do. It would cost thousands of dollars just to install the type of fencing required by the law.”

A group of local business owners gathered Wednesday with hopes of discussing bringing more arts based programs to East Toledo.

Led by District 3 Councilman Mike Craig, the focus of the meeting involved revitalizing Main Street.

“When I first came on, we were counting on the Marina District to help with developing,” said Craig. “But tonight, we’re going to shift things around and have Main Street help the Marina District.”

The Village of Genoa will accept applications for the position of police chief until Feb. 5, Mayor Mark Williams said.

The village is looking for a replacement for Chief Bob Bratton, who resigned after being accused of mishandling a Furtherance of Justice fund between 2008 and 2011 while he was Ottawa County Sheriff.

A hearing on the charge is scheduled for Jan. 29 in U.S. District Court in Toledo.

Eastwood prepares to induct first class into hall of fame

The Bruning, Gardner, and Filiere families will be the first class inducted into the Eagle Way Hall of Fame at a banquet Feb. 22 at Riverview Banquet Hall.

Families will be present to receive plaques, which will honor the three patriarchs, Dale M. Bruning, Doyce “Frenchy” Filiere, and Dallas E. Gardner, posthumously.

A week after hearing a proposal by Lake Township trustee Jeff Pettit to consider raising cemetery fees, the board of trustees did just that, passing a resolution that increases fees for setting foundations and for burials.

The increases go into effect Feb. 1.

The foundation fees are based on the size of stone and go up for each 6-inch increase in the size of the stone: from $165 for a 2-foot stone to $420 for a 7-foot stone.
