Oregon will announce this week that a $900 million natural gas-fired electric power plant will be constructed at a site on N. Lallendorf Road, City Administrator Mike Beazely told The Press last week.

It will be the second natural gas-fired electric power plant in the city. The first, Oregon Clean Energy, is still under construction on a 30-acre parcel on N. Lallendorf Road. The 800 megawatt plant is expected to be completed in the spring. The 960-megawatt facility that will be announced this week is expected to begin construction in early 2018, with start up operations in 2020.

Oregon council on Monday will consider a resolution supporting the establishment of a U.S. numbered bicycle route in Northwest Ohio.

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has established a goal to designate a signed network of U.S. and state bicycle routes that will accommodate long distance cycling and also serve as a backbone for local connections. The proposed routes follow the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials national initiative. To date, over 11,000 miles have been designated nationally across 23 states.

Dr. Christopher Winslow has been appointed as the new director for Ohio Sea Grant and Ohio State's Stone Laboratory, effective February 1. Winslow has served as the program's interim director since April 2015.

"Chris brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this position in the areas of strategic planning, Ohio Sea Grant administration, grant management, research, outreach and teaching," said Dr. Caroline Whitacre, senior vice president for research at The Ohio State University.

The Stone Lab campus is located on Gibraltar Island, less than a quarter mile off the shores of downtown Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island in Ottawa County.

CAFOs and CAUV figured prominently in the discussion Ohio Farmers Union delegates had during the organization’s recent annual convention.

To help avoid another harmful algae bloom in Lake Erie and other waterways, the OFU is proposing the Ohio Department of Agriculture prepare an accurate assessment of all livestock operations within each watershed in the state.

A resolution of support for a Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments study of a proposed regional water authority has been approved by the Lake Township trustees.

The trustees approved the resolution Tuesday after hearing a brief report from Mark Hummer, township administrator, of a TMACOG meeting he attended where the proposed water authority was discussed.
