Julie Muffler, who has been director of the Challenger Center of Lucas County in Oregon since the 2003 opening of the space education facility, is launching into a new frontier herself.
Muffler is resigning Dec. 23 to take a position as the deputy director of NASA’s education specialist program at Penn State University’s Aerospace, Education, Services Project (AESP) in University Park, PA. Penn State has a cooperative agreement with NASA to administer the education specialist program.

TOLEDO – With Dec. 31 and the year’s end just days away, many people are scrambling to find ways to lower their 2008 tax bills.
Daniel Jones, a senior tax advisor with H&R Block, offers seven steps taxpayers can still take to reduce their 2008 tax burden.
1. Review withholding allowances. Most employees will receive two more paychecks this calendar year. By reviewing their W-4s, they can determine if they’re withholding enough. If not, there’s still time to adjust and minimize their potential tax liability. H&R Block offers a free online withholding calculator to help taxpayers determine the right number of allowances to claim on their W-4s.

COLUMBUS - Ohio Department of Insurance Director Mary Jo Hudson is reminding Medicare beneficiaries that the open enrollment or “annual coordinated election” period for 2009 Medicare coverage ends at midnight Dec. 31. Those who don’t qualify for financial assistance to help pay for costs associated with a stand-alone Part D drug plan and enroll after the Dec. 31 deadline will incur a late enrollment penalty. The Department - through its Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program (OSHIIP) - is urging beneficiaries to call its toll-free hotline at 1-800-686-1578 and 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) for help sorting the plan choices and for enrollment help.
