An Oak Harbor councilman Monday defended his role as the finance committee chairman and the state of the village finances.

At the conclusion of the regular village council meeting, Don Douglas responded to an article in the The Press regarding the June 16 meeting. Douglas was absent when a finance report was passed out and discussed by his peers that day. They were at times critical of his actions and pondered the downward spiral of village finances. He read from a prepared statement Monday.

A recently-formed coalition of organizations, businesses and educational groups plans to develop a long-range strategy for protecting Ohio’s waterways.

Healthy Water Ohio intends to conduct a poll to gather input from the public that will guide the coalition’s efforts as it prepares a 20 to 30-year management strategy for the state - where users consume more than 11 billion gallons of water each day for personal and business purposes.

Former Oregon School board member P.J. Kapfhammer continued his criticism of the teacher’s union, the Oregon City Federation of Teachers, during a board meeting Monday.

Soon after, lifetime Oregon resident Dan Saevig, 52, was appointed by the school board Monday to fill the vacancy left Kapfhammer, who resigned last month.

The Oregon School Board voted 3-1 to appoint Dan Saevig, with Jeff Ziviski casting the opposing vote, to fill the seat vacated by P.J. Kapfhammer, who resigned last month.

Saevig was one of nine applicants and one of three finalists who were interviewed prior to the board’s announcement. Saevig will be sworn in at the July 15 board meeting.

Ottawa County packed a patriotic punch in a pre-July 4th excursion honoring wounded heroes.

Political leaders, county staff, students, veterans, businesses and local organizations united to deliver the best the area has to offer to 61 travelers from the Kentucky Wounded Heroes Project, an organization serving a five-region area including Ohio.

And the Ottawa County efforts didn’t disappoint.
