Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Luckey will celebrate 125 years of ministering to the community on Sunday, Nov. 2.

The community is invited to come and help celebrate the church’s rich history, which began back in 1883 during the Black Swamp era. At the time, some members of Salem Lutheran Church on Bradner Road were having a difficult time traveling the dirt roads every Sunday to attend church. They felt there was a need to build a church in Luckey.

A recently released 2007 state audit cleared the township of credit card fraud and “other illegal issues,” according to a press release issued by Trustee Joe Gray.

“Although earlier accusations by Trustee [Joe] Kiss and Fiscal Officer Julie Van Nest included credit card fraud and other illegal issues, there were no findings to support those concerns,” stated Gray in the press release.

Oregon plans to apply for another grant from the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) for its  “Safe Routes to School” sidewalk program, which is supposed to encourage or enable children in grades K-8, including those with disabilities, to walk or ride their bikes to school.

A Safe Routes to School Travel Plan has been developed through the guidelines of the National Safe Routes to School Program for Fassett Middle School, Starr Elementary School, and Coy Elementary School.

A workshop for farmers interested in establishing a Community Supported Agriculture program will be held Nov. 6 at Ole Zim’s Wagon Shed, State Route 590, in Gibsonburg.

Registration for the workshop, which is being sponsored by the Center for Innovative Food Technology, begins at 9 a.m. The workshop will run from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Speakers will be John and Diane Franklin, who operate the Rocky Gardens CSA in Davisburg, Michigan.

George Jensen is encouraged by the number of volunteers who’ve assisted with the Society of St. Andrew’s most recent local gleaning projects.

“The last two gleanings we had between 40 and 50 people show up, compared to earlier in the summer when we had a strawberry gleaning and only six people showed. Our communication is getting better,” he said last week. “We have had a lot of cooperation from growers. Only one so far has turned me down.”
