At Eastwood, Michael DeFalco played football and ran track. Now he wants to get back to his Italian lineage as a chef, and he’s getting a good start.

A grill cook at Biaggis Ristaurante Italiano at Levis Commons, DeFalco is planning to attend the French Culinary Institute in New York City and then study in Italy.

“I want to go because I have a passion for food, and it’s a real good school,” DeFalco said.

They call him Mr. Piv.

That’s short for Pivoriunas because, frankly, it’s much easier to pronounce.

Eastwood High School guidance director Richard Pivoriunas said he’s been called Piv since grade school, so it doesn’t bother him at all.

Even the guys in his garage band – “the elder beer men” – call him Piv. He plays the acoustic guitar.

The Oregon Vietnam Memorial Group, which has been planning a monument to honor the men and women who served in the Armed Forces during the Vietnam War, has announced that plans for the dedication ceremony have been finalized.

For voters in the Woodmore Local School District, what isn’t on the ballot in November will also have an effect on their finances.

A 1-mill permanent improvement levy that expires at the end of this year will be replaced by a 3.5-mill, 5-year levy if voters approve the new issue on the Nov. 4 ballot.

The district, however, won’t be collecting on a 2.6-mill bond issue that also expires at the end of 2008.
