The sounds of the infamous Ohio State Marching Band will resonate through Woodmore High School Oct. 17.

The band and Jon Waters, assistant marching band director, could not be happier about their return visit.

“I’m so happy they are allowing me to come home,” Waters said. “The timing was perfect. We are traveling to Michigan State University for a Saturday football game, The Wildcats play home on Friday and the Ottawa County Alumni are willing to host us for a second time in three years.”

When Kimberly Hasapes lost her mother, Nana, to leukemia last December, Kimberly didn’t make the choice to sit at home and gloat.

A 38-year-old retired United States military veteran, she remains motivated to help fight the disease that killed her mother.

Her 20 years in the Ohio Army National Guard, including 10 years active duty, took her to Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. She has dealt with difficult situations before and is determined to turn her mother’s death into something positive.

A Woodmore school board member and former girls basketball coach, Mike DeStazio doesn’t want anyone to think he is “tooting anybody’s horn.”

Especially his own horn or a member of his family.

But he’s proud of his daughter, Tammy, who is making an unusual sacrifice for any woman. It’s no sacrifice for Tammy, though, to be donating her hair to be made into a wig for cancer victims.

On January 29 of this year, Tammy and her sister Kelly’s mother, Sharon DeStazio, passed away at the age of 52 after a six-year bout with colon cancer.

New Heights Fellowship Church at 613 Main Street in East Toledo is getting involved in much more than teaching religion.

Baptist Pastor Dan Stevenson, a 1988 Northwood High School graduate, says the church is looking for “partners to help in revitalizing the community and equipping people with the tools necessary to live a fruitful and abundant life here in our community.”

The church is tied into a ministry which provides grocery and clothing to those in need. Stevenson said since the church was planted specifically on Main Street to help clean up and improve the community there, it is open to homeless individuals and others who may be despondent.

The number of water samples with excessive bacteria levels at Ohio beaches dropped in 2007 from the year before but were still high enough to rank Ohio second among all states, according to a report by the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Citing data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the report, Testing the Waters, A Guide to Water Quality at Vacation Beaches, indicates the number of closing and advisory days at ocean, bay, and Great Lakes beaches surpassed 20,000 for the third consecutive year.
