As winter arrives, and temperatures fall, feral or abandoned cats look for shelter.

Those who volunteer to care for such cats by giving them food and water, also have found ways to provide outside shelter that offers protection from the elements.

“You can make a stray cat shelter by doing something as simple as taking a large plastic Rubbermaid tub, turn it upside down, cut a hole in the side, and fill it with straw,” said Jill Borkowski, marketing director of Humane Ohio, a non-profit organization that offers low cost spay and neuter service for cats.

The owner of a bar in downtown Genoa is accusing the village mayor of having the police department harass his establishment with frequent unwarranted visits aimed at driving the owner out of business.

Eric Hise, owner of the Bharmacy, 621 Main Street, says in his complaint filed Dec. 5 with the Ottawa County Common Pleas Court that Mayor Mark Williams “…dislikes the Plaintiff for the exercise of his free speech and disapproves of alcoholic consumption and has with malice implemented an official Village of Genoa policy to enter business establishments serving alcohol; and has specifically instructed his police to harass the Plaintiff and his customers by repeatedly visiting his establishment without warrant or legitimate complaint.”

Humane Ohio is continuing efforts to spay/neuter cats in the 43605 zip code, which is mostly in East Toledo.

The non-profit group wants to reach its goal of fixing up to 1,400 cats in the area covered by the zip code, according to Jill Borkowski, marketing manager of the group.

“The special spay/neuter program for the 43605 zip code has been ongoing since 2007 and will continue until it reaches 1,400,” said Borkowski. “We’ve fixed about 600 so far, so we have approximately 800 to go.”

A Clay Township man last week renewed his call for township officials to address what he calls an on-going zoning violation on property near his State Route 51 residence.

Jeff Bodi, 23639 W. State Route 51, told the township board of trustees Monday that items such as trailers and snowmobiles at the property are still being stored outside, which is a violation of the township’s zoning resolution.
