The Lake Board of Education upheld a ban on a parent from attending any sporting events for one year.

During their September 17 meeting, board members stated that although their decision may be an emotionally hard one, they had to uphold the district’s policy and do what was right for the district as a whole.

Scott Pennington, whose son Andrew is a senior and a baseball player at Lake High School, was banned from attending any sporting events for one year by Lake Athletic Director Dave Shaffer, after an incident during an Ohio State ACME Baseball Congress tournament in July.

There is a new recreation director in Jerusalem Township, and he has a familiar face. Michael Skitowski moves into the part-time position at a time when big plans are on the drawing board.

Skitowski is known to many of the residents in the township and in Oregon because he is currently employed in the Oregon School System as the adaptive physical education specialist. He was an elementary physical education teacher at Jerusalem Elementary for 10 years, starting in 1996.

The Germans are coming, the Germans are coming!

Next August there will be more Germans here than at the annual German-American Festival at Oak Shade Grove in Oregon. There will not only be North Americans of German descent, there will be native Germans at what may be the biggest ethnic festival Toledo has ever seen.

GAF Society Chairman Timothy Pecsenye says the Gaufest next August (13-16) in downtown Toledo will fill more hotel rooms than religious missionaries from Jehovah’s Witness fill here each summer.

Ralph Myers can smile about it now.

On one of his first days on the job as the new principal at Woodmore High School, Myers received a phone call in early July about the possibility of the Ohio State University marching band playing at one of the Wildcats’ games this fall.

The call was from Jon Waters, an OSU assistant band director and a Woodmore graduate.

Connie and Richard Shiple, of Fleitz Street in Oregon, often thought about cutting down a large, ornamental tree in their yard because pods that fell from its branches littered the lawn.

“Every time the wind blows, the pods fall, and it’s a nuisance when I mow the lawn,” said Richard. “We had already made plans a couple years ago to have the tree trimmed or cut down, and we didn’t do it.”

Connie said one of the reasons they never got around to it is because the tree, over 85 feet tall, provided considerable shade for their house, which they bought in 2000.
