The Lake Township trustees may ask the Ohio Department of Transportation to reconsider its proposal to lower the speed limit on State Route 51 to 50 MPH and instead lower the limit to 45 MPH, a trustee said last week.

At the request of the trustees, ODOT recently conducted a speed study of the stretch of Rt. 51 in the township and came up with several proposals for enhancing safety, including establishing a no-passing zone between Cason Street and Millbury Road and lowering the speed limit to 50 MPH from Pemberville Road east to the township limits at Fostoria Road.

The current speed limit is 55 MPH.

Trustee Richard Welling said he and the other trustees will be monitoring the frequency of accidents on Route 51 and make an additional request to lower the speed limit if there isn’t a decline.

Oregon City Council at a committee of the whole meeting Monday debated the need for a concession stand and restroom facility to serve the recreation department’s new South Recreation Complex.

Council was considering whether to place on next week’s agenda an $11,280 contract with Buehrer Group Architecture & Engineering, Inc., for architectural and engineering services for the design of the new concession stand and restroom facility. The matter was referred to a recreation committee meeting scheduled for Dec. 7 for further discussion.

The site for the proposed new concession and restroom facility would be on city owned property located off Starr Extension Avenue west of the access drive and parking lots in the middle of the soccer and flag football fields.

On July 2, Northwood City council voted 6-1 against renewing contract negotiations with a company that provides the city’s speed van, a mobile vehicle that issues citations to motorists for speeding.

But at a meeting Aug. 27, Police Chief Tom Cairl made a pitch to continue negotiations with Redflex Safety Solutions, of Arizona, to continue providing a van equipped with a camera that targets Northwood streets with a high incidence of speeding.

The contract on the speed van expires in January.

The city also has stationary speed and red light photo enforcement cameras that have been installed at the intersections of Lemoyne and Woodville roads and Oregon and Wales roads since 2005. The city is also negotiating with Redflex to renew its contract on the stationary cameras.

Elmore Mayor Lowell Krumnow is asking anyone interested in being appointed to the village board of  public affairs to contact the village office at 419-862-3362 before Dec 4.

To be considered for the position, applicants must be at least 18 years old, a registered voter, and a resident of Elmore. Some public utility knowledge is preferred but not required. Due to meeting requirements, candidates should have a flexible schedule to perform the duties associated with the board position.

Nobody entered the recent election race for a seat on the three-member board.

With a little more than one week left before the Oregon mayoral primary on Sept. 15, the battle for votes to get on the November ballot is heating up.

Mayoral candidates Marvin Dabish, Councilman Mike Seferian, and Mayor Marge Brown are complaining that their campaign signs are being targeted by opponents’ supporters and being damaged, destroyed, or simply disappearing.

Dabish, a grocer who is making his first bid for public office, said someone is removing his signs throughout the city.

“I had some signs at the Bay Shore Supper club,” he said last week. “Then one day, I went there and saw all my signs missing, and replaced by Marge Brown signs. The Bay Shore Supper Club said they came in that morning and saw that my signs were missing.”

He isn’t accusing any of his opponents of the dirty deed.
