Spending cuts totaling about $192,000 have been approved by the Woodmore school board as it prepares for placing an emergency operating levy on the August ballot.

Superintendent Jane Garling said the cuts will remain in place even if voters don’t approve the ballot issue.

Last week, the board approved not replacing a teacher retiring at the elementary school and eliminating two teaching positions at the school. The elementary guidance counselor position is being reduced from 185 days to 120.

Northern Lakes League commissioner Larry Morrison, spokesperson for the newly formed Northern Buckeye Conference, said a quote in last week’s issue of The Press  stating the NBC had “put a letter out for applicants (for commissioner)” is incorrect.

Morrison added that Suburban Lakes League member Elmwood, which has not been invited to join the NBC, held a meeting to discuss its options. However, he was unaware whether SLL member Gibsonburg, also not invited to join the NBC, was in attendance. The Press regrets the error.

A resolution asking the Ohio Department of Transportation to lower the speed limit on State Route 51 to 35 mph between Fostoria Road and State Route 579 has been approved by the Lake Township trustees.

The speed limit is currently 55 mph but the resolution says the section of Route 51 that runs through the township has experienced “an increase in traffic use, accidents and developmental pressures.”

The trustees are asking ODOT to conduct a traffic speed study of the stretch of Route 51 between Fostoria Road and Route 579 and Richard Welling, a trustee, repeated  the board of trustees is still not giving up on having a traffic signal installed at the intersection of Route 51 and Millbury Road.

The Woodville Planning Commission is recommending changes to the village zoning ordinance covering the definition of home offices and home-based businesses.

The commission’s recommended definition of a home office is: A secondary use of a residential dwelling for professional office activities. Typically the office use would be ancillary to business activity conducted elsewhere. Residences of accountants, architects, artists, authors, clergy, landscape architects, lawyers, professional engineers, professional land surveyors, real estate agents, teachers or similar professions are examples of such use where the office would not involve use of special equipment or vehicles. A zoning permit is not required for this property use.

Given the opportunity, who wouldn’t appreciate some “spa time” – a pampering shampoo and haircut, a relaxing facial and getting their nails done?

Our four-legged friends can benefit from some pampering too, but getting the family pooch to the groomer can be time-consuming and troublesome, especially for canines that get anxious or sick on car trips.
