Oregon school district faces $1.9 million deficit

Despite budget cuts and a 5.9-mill operating levy voters passed earlier this year, the Oregon school board has projected a $1,905,509 deficit at the end of the 2009-2010 school year.

The district has cut close to $4 million from its operating budget in the past two years, but is still fighting an uphill battle due to the annual loss of almost $10 million in revenue, or 25 percent of its funding, due to House Bill 66, according to Jeff Ziviski, vice president of the school board, which met last Monday.

 
Finances top Eastwood board meeting

Union Bank in Pemberville is again offering the highest interest rates for the Eastwood school district’s deposits, according to the school district’s administration.

“They are significantly lower than they were in 2006 but better than all the competitors,” Brent Welker, school superintendent, said in his weekly newsletter.

 
Stiffer fine sought for handicap parking violations

Oregon City Council on Monday will consider increasing the fines against motorists who illegally park in handicapped parking zones.

Oregon Municipal Court Judge Jeff Keller requested increasing the fines to deter habitual offenders, Councilman Clint Wasserman said at a committee of the whole meeting last Monday.
