The Oregon school board last week appointed Sheron Baumgartner to fill the unexpired term of long-time board member Betty Carstensen, who passed away unexpectedly a few weeks ago.

Baumgartner, who previously served on the board from 1982 to 1993, was chosen from among a number of other candidates based on her experience and knowledge of the district.

“We had numerous options available to use,” said school board President Jeff Ziviski. The board wanted to choose someone who, like Carstensen, is from Jerusalem Township.

“Sheron is unique in that she meets our established criteria and is available to serve the district in a time of need,” said Ziviski.

Baumgartner was chosen from a list of approximately 12 people, including previous board members as well as members of the community, who had expressed an interest in filling the vacancy, said Ziviski.

Ethnic restaurants are a part of our present-day culture.

We are all familiar with restaurants that specialize in Hungarian, Chinese, Greek, Mexican, and food from other cultures. There’s one ethnic food that has African roots, but it’s become associated with African-American culture today.

Soul food, which became a part of America’s pop culture in the 1960s, has come a long ways from its roots in Africa. But a new business owner is introducing soul food to East Toledo.

Six months ago, J.R. McCardell and his family opened Serenity Family Soul Food Restaurant at the former location of O’Malley’s Pub at the corner of Woodville Road and East Broadway.

“Our food is good down to your soul...,” is the restaurant’s motto, and McCardell stands behind that.

The meeting will be at 10 a.m. in the county courthouse atrium.

By designating the county as a recovery zone, the towns will have access to $8.83 million in Recovery Zone Economic Development Bonds and private entities will have access to $13.25 million in Recovery Zone Facility Bonds.

The recovery act includes a total of $25 billion allocated for the bond issues: $15 billion for the facility bonds and $10 billion for the economic development bonds.

Oregon Councilman Mike Seferian attributed his dominant win over incumbent Mayor Marge Brown in the mayoral primary on Tuesday to perseverance.

“I worked hard. I thought I would do well. But I was very pleased when the vote totals started coming in,” said Seferian. “I felt my supporters were getting out the message I was trying to give, and people were listening.”

Seferian, 51, will face Brown, 72, in the November election. Seferian, who has been on council for nine terms, won 54 percent of the vote, while Brown, who is seeking reelection to a third term, won 37 percent. Grocer Marvin Dabish finished last with less than 9 percent of the vote.

United States Navel Sea Cadets from the Commodore Perry Division of Greater Toledo kicked off two years of training in August with the 2009 Sea Cadet Challenge, hosted by the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, other naval units and Harbor View Yacht Club.

Several youths, ages 10-18, from the Press coverage area and their parents participated in the event. The Sea Cadet program has been in the United States since the early 1950s.

For the local Sea Cadets, this was their first sailing trip on Lake Erie.

Approximately 12 sailing vessels took the Sea Cadets on a three-hour trip into western Lake Erie. Several power vessels from Harbor View Yacht Club, located at 2180 Autokee St. in Oregon, accompanied the sailing vessels in support of the exercise.
