Recipients of easements in the latest round of the Clean Ohio Agricultural Easement Purchase Program are expected to be announced in mid-July, the Ohio Department of Agriculture announced last week.

About $6.25 million in Clean Ohio funds are to be distributed.

More than 200 farm property owners, including nine from Wood, Lucas, and Sandusky counties, have submitted applications to the department of agriculture to be included in the easement purchase program that preserves land in perpetuity for agricultural use.

The cost of water rates in northern Wood County will be discussed at a public forum June 4 at the Rossford Public Library.

The forum, which will start at 7 p.m., is being hosted by Wood County Commissioner Tim Brown and State Representative Randy Gardner.

They described the forum as “fact-finding” in nature, saying they want to hear from Rossford and area residents regarding water contract issues with the City of Toledo as well as water rate hikes that have hit other communities in that part of the county.

The Libertarian Party of Ohio has begun organizing efforts in Wood County and will hold a public development meeting June 9 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Wood County Library main branch in Bowling Green.

Members of the party will present an overview of the party’s plans and its position on current issues.

With all of the doom and gloom in the news concerning the sagging real estate market, increasing numbers of foreclosures, layoffs, and disappearing retirement accounts, one couple has decided to “keep on keeping on.”

For the last seven years, Marty Roman and his wife Becky Boswell have been busy beautifying and protecting Kessler Park in east Toledo.

“I started cleaning up the park in 2001,” Roman, who is retired from Iron Workers Local 55, said. “We adopted the park officially in 2005.”

The Ohio State Legislature last week approved a bill to combat the housing foreclosure crisis.

The Home Foreclosure Prevention Bill places a moratorium on home foreclosures and provides reasonable solutions that would allow families to have the opportunity to save their homes, according to State Rep. Matt Szollosi (D. Toledo), speaker pro tempore.

“Lucas County has the second highest rate of foreclosure in the state, up 15 percent last year,”said Szollosi. “This bill will help keep families in their homes.”
