The Genoa’s Farmer’s Market, which began its third season in May, has reduced the number of days the market will be open. Last year there were 27 market days, according to Cindy Nolte, market coordinator, and this year there will be a total of 13.

The market will run from May through October, but it will only be held every other week.

The change, she said, is due to a lack of support from the community and requests from the venders.

David Combs and his girlfriend, Jill Gulch, have started a Web site, Forgotten Felines of Toledo, to help find good homes for abandoned cats they’ve taken in.

Combs and Gulch started taking in cats two-and-a-half years ago when they moved to Elgin Avenue in East Toledo and noticed the felines entering and exiting an abandoned house next door, near an alley.

“Eventually, winter came. One cat was really nice and he would come up to the back door,” said Combs. “We felt sorry for him and started feeding him. There was a blizzard coming, so we brought him inside. We got him fixed up and found him a home. He was such a sweet cat.”

Marvin Dabish, an Oregon resident for four years, is running for mayor.

Dabish, 32, turned in his petitions to the Lucas County Board of Elections by the June 17 deadline to be on the Sept. 15 primary ballot.

He joins Mayor Marge Brown, who is running for a third term, and Councilman Mike Seferian on the ballot for mayor.

The top two vote getters in the primary will square off in the November election.

The board of elections will go through the process of certifying the petitions within the next two weeks.

The Ottawa County Emergency Management Agency will conduct a hazardous materials exercise June 29 at 6 p.m. at the Brush Wellman plant in Harris Township.

Personnel from Brush Wellman, the Harris-Elmore Fire and Emergency Medical Service, Rocky Ridge Fire Department, and Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department, Red Cross, and other county agencies will participate.

A resolution asking the Ohio Department of Transportation to lower the speed limit on State Route 51 to 35 mph between Fostoria Road and State Route 579 has been approved by the Lake Township trustees.

The speed limit is currently 55 mph but the resolution says the section of Route 51 that runs through the township has experienced “an increase in traffic use, accidents and developmental pressures.”

The trustees are asking ODOT to conduct a traffic speed study of the stretch of Route 51 between Fostoria Road and Route 579 and Richard Welling, a trustee, repeated  the board of trustees is still not giving up on having a traffic signal installed at the intersection of Route 51 and Millbury Road.
