A bill that prohibits the director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources from issuing a permit or lease agreement to remove oil or natural gas from Lake Erie has been introduced in the state legislature.
State Representative Nickie Antonio (D – Lakewood) introduced the bill, which supporters say is needed despite a federal ban on drilling in the Great Lakes being in effect.
Once again the Lake Township trustees have gone on record opposing a proposal floated by Gov. John Kasich to lease the Ohio Turnpike to a private entity.
The trustees Tuesday unanimously approved a resolution against the leasing of the toll road, saying it could detrimentally affect township businesses in the I-280/turnpike corridor which benefit from the turnpike toll collection system.
The Benton-Carroll-Salem school board has scheduled a special meeting for Aug. 9 to decide on whether to place another request for millage on the ballot in November.
Voters last week turned down a 3.9-mill, 5-year operating levy that would have generated an additional $1.32 million annually for the Ottawa County school system.
Assistant county administrator named
The Wood County commissioners have appointed Joseph Fawcett of Bowling Green as the new assistant county administrator. Fawcett’s duties will include managing the county budget preparation process and monitoring appropriations, overseeing and supervising fiscal and clerical staff.
The Genoa school board has a potential buyer for the Brunner Elementary School building but the deal requires rezoning of the school property.
“We have accepted a buyer’s offer but the deal is contingent upon a zoning change,” said Superintendent Dennis Mock Wednesday. “Right now it is zoned R-1 and the buyer would like it rezoned B-1, like for a small business.”
