Cardinal Stritch volleyball coach John Kazmaier and Northview coach Tony Geer are no strangers.

They coach together in the same club with Glass City Volleyball, and they were asked over the summer if they wanted to get their teams together to raise money for charity.

On Aug. 20, Stritch and visiting Northview raised more than $1,600 for the Family and Child Abuse Prevention Center of Northwest Ohio.

The event was sponsored by Glass City Volleyball, a Junior Olympic-style program that runs from January through May. Kazmaier, in his first season at Cardinal Stritch, coaches a 17-year-old squad with Glass City, which competes in Ohio, West Virginia and Western Pennsylvania.

With a little more than one week left before the Oregon mayoral primary on Sept. 15, the battle for votes to get on the November ballot is heating up.

Mayoral candidates Marvin Dabish, Councilman Mike Seferian, and Mayor Marge Brown are complaining that their campaign signs are being targeted by opponents’ supporters and being damaged, destroyed, or simply disappearing.

Dabish, a grocer who is making his first bid for public office, said someone is removing his signs throughout the city.

“I had some signs at the Bay Shore Supper club,” he said last week. “Then one day, I went there and saw all my signs missing, and replaced by Marge Brown signs. The Bay Shore Supper Club said they came in that morning and saw that my signs were missing.”

He isn’t accusing any of his opponents of the dirty deed.

An autopsy on the body of a woman found in Lake Erie near Oak Harbor has determined the cause of death but law enforcement officials Thursday said they weren’t disclosing how she died until the investigation has proceeded further.

On the evening of Thursday, August 27, the Ottawa County Sheriffs Office received several calls concerning the identity of the victim found at Lamberjack’s Marina in Carroll Township on Tuesday evening.

The callers saw pictures of the tattoos on the victim during local news broadcasts at 5 p.m. and recognized them as being those of a family member. Ottawa County detectives met with family members, including her mother and brother, in Toledo on Thursday evening. They positively identified the victim from photographs of the tattoos and surgical scars on the body.

The victim has been identified as Jennifer L. Snively, 26, of 1132 Earl Street, East Toledo.

Court rules in favor of lakefront landowners

The legal argument over where Lake Erie shoreline property becomes private land shifted in favor of land owners with the 11th Ohio District Court of Appeals ruling property lines change with the water level.

The court ruled last week the land beneath the water is open to the public and lakefront property residents own the land above the waterline.

The ruling essentially upholds a ruling by the Lake County Commons Pleas Court in December, 2007.

“By setting the boundary at the water’s edge, we recognize and respect the private property rights of littoral owners, while at the same time, provide for the public’s use of the waters of Lake Erie and the land submerged under those waters, when submerged. The water’s edge provides a readily discernible boundary for both the public and littoral landowners,” the appeals court wrote.

An autopsy on the body of a woman found in Lake Erie near Oak Harbor has determined the cause of death but law enforcement officials Thursday said they weren’t disclosing how she died until the investigation has proceeded further.

The autopsy also confirmed the victim was dead before being placed in the water. Investigators had estimated the body had been in the water for less than two weeks.

The victim is a white female and believed to be under 30 with long brown hair in a pony tail and brown eyes. Her height is 5-7 and her weight is 122 pounds.

Several more tattoos were discovered on her body during the autopsy, including a second five point star with a sun burst design found on her left front shoulder. An identical tattoo is on her right shoulder.
