Yard signs and T-shirts with an inspirational message that mentions Christ are a common site in the Genoa area as residents express support for the message and for a high school principal who had the message on a sign hanging on her office wall before being asked to take it down.

Residents have purchased about 600 T-shirts and about 200 yard signs bearing the message: “Be Kind, Speak Truth, Love Others, Show Grace, Work Hard, Be Grateful, Follow Christ,” according to Angela Bradfield, a 1995 graduate of Genoa High School and an organizer of the effort.

For Carolyn and Michael Kobasher, Sunday, June 12, seemed like the perfect evening to spend at their Lakeway Drive home.

Carolyn was relaxing with her dog Macy, an 8-year-old black Labrador Retriever, by her side. She was enjoying the lake and quilting. That is when everything went terribly wrong.

“We relocated here in December from our hometown thinking that we were moving to a quiet, relaxing community,” Carolyn said. “I never could have imagined that my first day sitting out by the water with my quilting frame would have turned to this tragedy.”

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public information session and hearing July 14 to accept comments on a draft permit for operations at the Envirosafe Services of Ohio, Inc., landfill in Oregon.

The meeting will be held at the Lake Erie Center, 6200 Bayshore Rd., starting at 6 p.m.

During the information session, EPA representatives will present information about the draft permit and answer questions. During the hearing, which will immediately follow the information session, the public can submit comments for the record regarding the permit.

While looking to the future and a ballot issue that will decide whether the Benton-Carroll-Salem School District will have a modern school with the latest technology, the district administration and school board are also not losing sight of the past.

If voters approve a 4.4-mill bond issue on the August ballot, a new building to house the kindergarten through seventh grade will be constructed to replace the R.C. Waters Elementary School and Oak Harbor Middle School.

Guy Parmigian, district superintendent, said he and the board are committed to saving items that have historical significance and incorporating them into the new building.

State Rep. Michael Sheehy (D-Oregon) has announced the release of $355,000 in state funds for the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority to help improve water quality in the Port of Toledo and the western basin of Lake Erie.

The Port Authority will partner with the City of Findlay to use a new silt collector system to capture and remove sediment and associated nutrients from the Blanchard River prior to its entry into the Maumee River and ultimately, the Port of Toledo commercial shipping channel.
