A start-up firm has received sufficient funding to begin production early next year of solar power inverters at a Moline-Martin Road building in Lake Township.

Norman Rapino, President and Chief Operating Officer of Nextronex Energy Systems, said the company has begun operations at the facility and already has plans for installing three inverters at the Ohio Air National Guard Base at Toledo Express Airport.

He projects the company could employ 15-20 workers by the end of 2010.

The company secured funding through the Rocket Ventures fund of the Regional Growth Partnership and University of Toledo Innovative Enterprise as well as local investors.

Ethnic restaurants are a part of our present-day culture.

We are all familiar with restaurants that specialize in Hungarian, Chinese, Greek, Mexican, and food from other cultures. There’s one ethnic food that has African roots, but it’s become associated with African-American culture today.

Soul food, which became a part of America’s pop culture in the 1960s, has come a long ways from its roots in Africa. But a new business owner is introducing soul food to East Toledo.

Six months ago, J.R. McCardell and his family opened Serenity Family Soul Food Restaurant at the former location of O’Malley’s Pub at the corner of Woodville Road and East Broadway.

“Our food is good down to your soul...,” is the restaurant’s motto, and McCardell stands behind that.

Armed with a grant from the Ottawa County Community Foundation, Jennifer Fording, is preparing to take the Harris-Elmore Public Library’s historical materials on the road for viewing by the public.

The library is using the grant to help pay for a laptop computer and projector that will enable Fording, the local history librarian, to display digitized archival records on location for interested organizations.

The Harris-Elmore library is one of 12 public libraries in Northwest Ohio participating in a regional document digitization project under the auspices of the Ohio Historical Society.

Georgiana Huizenga, director of the Harris-Elmore library, said the goal of the project is to make an array of important but often deteriorating local history records available to a wider audience, including researchers throughout the U.S. and world, through the historical society’s Ohio Memory Project.

Between 150 to 200 people showed up at the Christ Dunberger Post Legion Hall on Pickle Road for a special send-off to Northwood graduates Lance Mendoza, Ronnie Koch, Brandon Bugbee, and Thomas Lackner.

The young men, who have enlisted into the U.S. Marines, were also honored at a blessing ceremony at Hope Community Church in early September. Three of the boys left one day after their send-off for basic training at Parris Island, S.C., and Lackner is scheduled to leave in October.

“The kids have known each other from I think second grade, when we moved over to Northwood,” Susie Mendoza, Lance’s mother, said.

“I know Lance and Ronnie were on the same soccer team when they were little, in third grade. The only way I know that is because I was their coach and every year at the end of the year the parents of the soccer team would give me a shirt with the names of all the kids on it. They were all pretty close, but Brandon and Ronnie were really close.

It was icing on the cake for Seferian after he overwhelmingly defeated incumbent Marge Brown for the mayor’s seat on Nov. 4.

Seferian said he felt “humbled” as he took the oath of office.
