If he didn’t wear a police uniform, Lake Township Police Chief Mark Hummer might be attired in the clothes of a used car salesman, a bright sport jacket perhaps.

Since becoming chief in 2004, he has sold nearly 20 surplus township vehicles to buyers across the country, using the online marketplace eBay.

Jim Murphy, of Murphy Family Insurance, says his business is all about helping others in time of need.

“You buy insurance for the one bad day. Insurance is all about protecting your family’s financial future. One bad can be devastating, not only emotionally but financially as well. That’s where we come in and help people pick up the pieces,” Murphy said.

A former candidate for Oregon mayor is among two candidates challenging seven incumbents on city council.

A group of Oregon residents have asked city officials to install sidewalks on Navarre Avenue, between Coy and Lallendorf roads, to improve safety for pedestrians.

The group recently demonstrated on Navarre in hopes of raising awareness for their cause.
