open houses and special events the weekend after Thanksgiving.

The Genoa Merchants will sponsor their Holiday Open House event Nov. 27, 28 and 29.

The special holiday event will offer the perfect occasion for family members and friends to get together, get a jump on their holiday shopping and maybe enjoy a leisurely lunch – one that doesn’t include turkey leftovers. In addition, some of the merchants will be offering drawings and specials.

At Packer Creek Pottery, shoppers will find unique and colorful majolica pottery created by artist Jan Pugh. Packer Creek Pottery can be found in the homes of many celebrities, including Jerry Seinfeld, Julie Andrews, Barbara Bush, Queen Noor of Jordan, Cokie Roberts, Jamie and Joy Farr, Katie Holmes, and The White House. Pugh specializes in handcrafted items in a wide variety of patterns and designs, including festive holiday patterns.

Just next to the pottery shop is Genoa Custom Interiors, which features rooms of home-decorating and gift ideas including furniture, jewelry, purses, scarves, silk floral items, etc.

Elmore Mayor Lowell Krumnow is asking anyone interested in being appointed to the village board of  public affairs to contact the village office at 419-862-3362 before Dec 4.
 
To be considered for the position, applicants must be at least 18 years old, a registered voter, and a resident of Elmore. Some public utility knowledge is preferred but not required. Due to meeting requirements, candidates should have a flexible schedule to perform the duties associated with the board position.
 
Nobody entered the recent election race for a seat on the three-member board.

A grant of $100,000 from FirstEnergy Solutions to Lake Township comes with no strings attached, Tom Hays, township solicitor, informed the township’s trustees last week.
 
Hays said the township became eligible for the grant by signing an agreement for electric service with the utility through the Northwest Ohio Aggregation Coalition.
 
The trustees in June agreed to a contract with FirstEnergy for service to homeowners and small businesses that chose to not opt out of the coalition’s agreement with the company.

The speed limit for much of State Route 51 in Lake Township will likely be dropping to 50 mph in the near future.
 
The township trustees have reluctantly agreed to a recommendation by the Ohio Department of Transportation to lower the limit to 50 mph from 55 mph between Fostoria and Pemberville roads. The limit will remain 45 mph between Pemberville Road to the east corporation limit of the City of Northwood.
 
The trustees Tuesday unanimously agreed to the 50-mph limit after ODOT rejected their request to lower the limit to 45 mph for all of Route 51 in the township.

Oregon city council on Monday will consider giving a 2 ½ percent raise to the city’s full-time and part-time non-bargaining employees.
 
The increase would be retroactive to July 1 of this year. Effective in 2010, all non-bargaining employees’ pay ranges would increase by 2 percent.
 
“These are our department heads, our professional, technical and supervisory employees,” said Mayor Marge Brown at a committee of the whole committee last Monday. “This is pretty much in line with all the unions,” she added.
