Currently there are 40 horizontally-fractured natural gas wells in Ohio — and 4,000 more expected in the next four years.

Even though eastern Ohio is where most of the natural gas drilling activity is now taking place, this presents an economic opportunity for Northwest Ohio businesses.

Oregon officials at a council meeting on Dec. 19 urged businesses that were located in the Woodville Mall in Northwood to consider moving to Oregon.

The mall, which had opened as the first shopping mall in the area in 1969, was closed in December because of health department violations. Many of the business owners were frustrated that the mall had closed before Christmas, one of the busiest seasons of the year.

A medical emergency center is being proposed in Oregon at the corner of Dustin and Coy, according to city officials.

“The property that has been for sale for quite a while at the corner of Dustin and Coy has been sold and will be developed as a medical emergency center,” Councilman Jerry Peach said at a council meeting Dec. 19.

The Ohio Sixth District Court of Appeals has upheld the conviction of Thomas Zich for the 1991 murder of his wife, whose body was found in the trunk of her car parked on an East Toledo street.

The appeals court affirmed the guilty verdict reached by a Lucas County Common Pleas Court jury in 2009 – a case that drew widespread interest because it had been a cold case reopened and involved several police agencies.

On Dec. 17, First St. John Lutheran Church, Seaman Street, Toledo, hosted the Toledo Symphony Orchestra for a gala holiday concert held as part of the church’s 150th anniversary celebration.

The church was decorated in holiday finery for the sold-out concert, which was conducted by Jeffrey Pollock, has been planned in celebration of the church’s 150th anniversary. The church will be decked out for the gala performance, which will include a wide range of Christmas songs, including “Adeste Fidelis,” “Song of the Bells,” and a Christmas singalong.
