After rejecting a permanent improvement levy request in November by a 41-vote margin, voters in the Genoa School District will again see a levy request on next week’s ballot – but with a twist.

School officials are again putting a 1.6-mill permanent improvement levy before voters but have opted to set a five-year term on the issue. The ballot issue that fell to defeat in November was to run continuously if it had passed.

Genoa Village council recently approved a 4 percent raise for administrator Kevin Gladden.

Gladden, who serves a dual role as administrator as well as public works director, now makes $62,400 annually, according to January’s council minutes. He also received a bump to the $2,000 longevity bonus level, Fiscal Officer Charles Brinkman said.

As soon as Pastor Dan Beaudoin got off his American Airlines flight and hit the ground at earthquake-ravaged Haiti, he knew he was in a different world.

“Oh boy, it was eye-opening,” Pastor Beaudoin said. “As soon as you get off the plane, the heat really gets to you because it’s really hot and humid.

The Western Lake Erie Region during the War of 1812 will be the focus of the annual Friends of Pearson March Sunday Series, which features weekly presentations Sundays at 2 p.m. in Macomber Lodge at Pearson Metropark.  The series will begin March 4 with a presentation by Jeff Helmer, a park ranger at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial on South Bass Island. The monument commemorates the Battle of Lake Erie, which changed the course of the war.

Thirteen businesses and organizations have been nominated for the 19th annual Prism Awards, a local initiative to honor excellence.

Unlike past years, this year’s nominees include mainly small businesses. They are: D.R. Ebel, Northwood; East Point Physical Therapy; Oregon; Homestead Variety, Oregon; Maumee Bay Obstetrics & Gynecology, Oregon; Simply Green Lawn Service, Oregon and Therapy Works, Oregon.
