If the recent upswing in the development of Ohio’s oil and natural gas fields should make its way to Wood County, the county commissioners want to make sure the areas rural roads will be maintained in the event of heavier than normal traffic.

The commissioners are mailing copies of a letter they received from the state’s departments of transportation and natural resources to local officials that outlines a suggested agreement covering road use and maintenance issues where horizontal drilling projects may affect the infrastructure.

Ottawa County is revising its hazardous materials response team program with the help of a consultant.

A response team was assembled through the Ottawa County Emergency Management Agency about seven years, according to EMA Director Fred Petersen.

“Essentially, over the years there has not been a lot of involvement and we need to re-energize it,” Petersen said.

When the Lake school board last month approved cuts in spending of almost $1.2 million, superintendent Jim Witt also announced the administration would be posting a link on the district’s website to address rumors that would inevitably make their way through the community.

Kristina Polk won’t pretend to be the lone spokesperson for the Ohio Young Birders Club, but you’ll have to admit she’s a very impressive representative.

Polk, 16, a junior at North Ridgeville High School, joined the OYBC after she attended the Biggest Week in American Birding at Maumee Bay State Park last year. Kim Kaufman, executive director of the Black Swamp Bird Observatory, and BSBO Education Director Ken Keffer introduced Polk to the OYBC.

Ottawa County is in search of a new leader for its building inspection department.

Don Waggoner of Port Clinton retired as the chief building official on March 31, after 12 years on the job.

Prior to that, he owned his own engineering firm in downtown Port Clinton and had worked on multiple projects, including those for the City of Port Clinton and Port Clinton City Schools.
