A resolution expressing opposition to the proposed lease of the Ohio Turnpike will be on the agenda of Oregon City Council on Monday.

Gov. John Kasich has proposed leasing the 241-mile turnpike to private interests to turn a profit.

“Oregon believes that leasing the currently well-maintained turnpike will result in a lesser maintained roadway and higher tolls unrelated to the actual cost of its safe operation,” states the resolution.

A bill that prohibits the director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources from issuing a permit or lease agreement to remove oil or natural gas from Lake Erie has been introduced in the state legislature.

State Representative Nickie Antonio (D – Lakewood) introduced the bill, which supporters say is needed despite a federal ban on drilling in the Great Lakes being in effect.

On Aug. 11, Tom Wojciechowski welcomed Center residents for a few hours of fishing in the pond at his Genoa home.

Years ago, Oregon used to issue water advisories to residents restricting water usage when drought conditions prevailed during the summer months.

The city’s water plant had a capacity of just eight million gallons per day, so it wasn’t unusual for the city to try to limit water usage at the time, recalls Public Service Director Paul Roman.
